Program
Act I
Prototype Reloaded
Ultimately Prototype (conceived and choreographed by Massimiliano Volpini) is a self-deprecating humorous work which gave us Bolle as a kind of dance cyborg eventually tempered with more human instincts. It looked like a protest against the digital way of life.
Carnival in Venice
The Carnival of Venice is a comédie-lyrique in a prologue and three acts by the French composer André Campra. The libretto is by Jean-François Regnard. In one critic's assessment: "In a magisterial act of conflation, this composer blends the styles of Lully, Lalande, Monteverdi and Cavalli and manages also to foreshadow Handel and Rameau. He dreamt up a multi-hued score, capable of recapturing in Paris both the carnival spirit in general and that of the legendary Venice in particular."
Dying Swam
The Dying Swan (originally The Swan) is a solo dance choreographed by Mikhail Fokine to Camille Saint-Saëns's Le Cygne from Le Carnaval des Animaux as a pièce d'occasion for the ballerina Anna Pavlova, who performed it about 4,000 times. The short ballet (4 minutes) follows the last moments in the life of a swan and was first presented in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1905. The ballet has since influenced modern interpretations of Odette in Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and has inspired non-traditional interpretations as well as various adaptations.
Don Chisciotte (Atto III – Pas de Deux)
Don Chisciotte (Atto III – Pas de Deux) is from Act III of ballet Don Quixote. In this Pas de Deux, it’s a challenge to the male dancer's lifting, rotating and jumping techniques, as well as to the female dancer’s toe balance ability, rotation skills, etc., The 32 swings of the last coda (the ending allegro of the dance) is an iconic difficulty in ballet dance.
Firebreather
In 2015, Firebreather is created by Katarzyna kozielska for principal dancer Daniel Camargo. The background music is created by L.Einaudi, who’s an Italian contemporary classical music composer and pianist. A review said: "If you need fireworks at night, then Daniel Camargo can ignite for you, he’s a real generator, a vibrant firebreather."
Vertigo
Set to Johann Sebastian Bach's Chaconne for Solo Violin and Four Voices, in Vertigo, the Belgian choreographer and stage designer Stijn Celis questions freedom amidst restrictions and searches for a place of harmony.
Act II
Nothing
Nothing is choreographed by choreographer & educator Jamal Story. USAIBC 06 Senior Bronze Medalist Joseph Michael Gatti & Cuban Finalist Adiarys Almeida performed in the final round.
Qualia
Qualia, meaning a raw and sensory experience, marked by Wayne McGregor's debut on The Royal Opera House stage.
Swan Lake (Atto III – Pas de Deux)
Swan Lake, Op. 20, is a ballet composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875–76.
The black swam Pas de Deux is the most important dance in act III. Black swam Odile is led by the demon Rothbart to the ball and approached to the prince intentionally. In the music background of adagio which is full of temptation and feminism, the black swam sometimes plunges into the prince’s arms, sometimes arrogantly rejects the prince, while sometimes imitates the white swam’s smile. She sets a trap and waits for the prince to fall into her trap. The prince gradually loses his ability to reject such temptations, he forgets his promise to white swam by the Swam Lake and shows his love for black swam. About the techniques, in the last part(coda), the black swam, uses the famous 32-round fouette expresses herself, her self-satisfaction is beyond words.
Les Bourgeois
For years, Belgian choreographer and ballet director Ben Van Cauwenbergh (Antwerp, 1958) was one of the star dancers of the Royal Ballet Flanders and the London Festival Ballet (now: English National Ballet). This is why Les Bourgeois – with which Van Cauwenbergh makes his debut at Introdans in 2018 – is a popular item at ballet galas and competitions.
Rencontre
Rencontre, a new choreography for Roberto Bolle after Prototype, is also a multimedia ballet based on René Aubry's music and Staff Sas’s photos. Roberto Bolle takes up the most evocative visual effects of the Prototype extended version, the new dreamy creation by Massimiliano Volpini interpreted by Melissa Hamilton and Roberto.
