Adapted from the novel of the same name by French author Gaston Leroux, Shanghai Ballet's original ballet The Phantom of the Opera is the first stage production to interpret the work in ballet terms. The story takes place at the end of the 19th century and tells the tale of the Phantom who hides in the Paris Opera House and tries to control the whole theatre in an almost crazy way, dominating the destiny of the new star of the ballet, Coristine.
Synopsis In the Paris Opera House at the end of the 19th century, the Phantom dominates the place in an almost frenzied way, when the new star of the ballet, Coristine, catches his eye. The Phantom falls in love with Coristine even though she has someone else in mind, and gives everything he has to teach her, turning her into the centre of attention.
Gossip, jealousy and dark vengeance come to a head, fear spreads, anger burns, and the whole of Paris seems to be plunged into endless darkness. ...... For a time, the Phantom tries to possess Coristine by any means necessary, but Coristine's true heart for her lover disintegrates the Phantom's selfish desires. In the end, the Phantom fulfils his young lover and disappears into endless loneliness and despair ......
