● Theater Description
Premiered in 1875, the opera Carmen is the representative work of the French composer Bizet, and also the last creation of this French composer in his life. The distinctive theme and rich orchestration are the important reasons why this French opera has left a deep impression on the audience musically, and the cantatas in Carmen, such as Love is a Free Bird and The Matador's Song, have long become household classics. The composer's portrayal of the heroine Carmen lives like a fresh red rose, her beauty is self-evident, her attitude towards love can be described as unique, the pursuit of pure and passionate love, with a free and unrestrained soul, such self-awareness has so far made the world marveled at.
The story takes place in Seville, Spain in 1860. A beautiful and stubborn gypsy girl, a cigarette factory worker named Carmen, meets Don José, a squad leader of the cavalry, in a factory brawl, and she successfully utilizes her beauty to seduce the latter, so that he not only lets herself go, but also falls in love with her from then on. Don José not only for Carmen abandoned his first love, Mikayla, but also joined the ranks of gypsy smugglers, and Carmen together to live a wandering life on the run. However, love is like a free bird, Carmen later fell in love with the spirited bullfighter Escamillo, Don José begged her to change her mind but was refused. In the end, Don José stabs Carmen with the dagger he has hidden on his body, ending their love with his own hands. As everyone cheered for the bullfighter's victory, Carmen died under Don José's dagger.
