About Cooking A Dream

It takes a minute to recite a beautiful Tang poem,

An hour to cook a pot of fragrant millet,

A century to experience the ups and downs of life,

And a millennium to conceive the depth of Chinese philosophical spirit.

Lu(卢生), a young farmer and scholar who dreams of fame and fortune, meets a Taoist priest named Lv in an inn while taking shelter from a sudden downpour. While waiting for the storm to pass, the innkeeper brews a pot of millet and Lu falls asleep on the priest’s magical pillow, entering a dream world. He experiences a full life where he passes the imperial examination, enjoys wealth and fortune, and spends his final days in poverty and loneliness. He wakes up in despair—the innkeeper’s millet still simmering on the stove—realizing it was all an empty dream.

Inspired by the legendary Tang Dynasty novel A Story of a DreamCooking A Dream explores the popular Chinese proverb that says that glory, honor, and wealth are nothing but shadows.

A mesmerizing fusion of traditional Chinese Opera elements and contemporary theatre, the production premiered at the French Festival d’Avignon in 2011 with 24 performances and was well-received by audiences worldwide.

About New National Opera

In the 1920s, a group of Chinese students who had studied in Britain and America initiated the “Chinese National Drama Movement”. To look into its essence, as Yu Shangyuan explained in his book, they aimed to create “Chinese plays performed by Chinese people with Chinese materials for Chinese audiences”, which is what they called “Chinese National Drama”.

Nearly a century later, this aesthetic understanding still has its practical significance. Director Huang Ying followed the predecessors’ perspectives, constantly digging into “Chinese materials”, refining “Chinese methods”, and expressing “Chinese thoughts”, gradually exploring the stage presentation of “New Chinese National Drama”.

In 2011, Huang Ying’s first new national drama “Cooking A Dream” was born and premiered at the Festival d’Avignon, one of the three major international theatre festivals in the world, and was highly recognized. Afterward, as an artistic example of Eastern philosophy, “Cooking A Dream” as a representative of Chinese theatre, visited Britain, France, Germany, South Korea, Singapore, and other Eurasian countries. While watching the ancient story, the new national drama refreshed the audience.
