China Puppet Art Theatre was founded in 1955 and was restructured on September 15th, 2006. Always persistent to inherit and innovate traditional Chinese puppetry art, the theatre is devoted to telling the stories of China, carrying forward the spirit of the nation and its image by integrating unique Chinese national arts and fairy tales into performances.
China Puppet Theatre's The Crane and the Turtle won the "Highest Honour Award" at the 7th International Circus Festival held in Hungary in 1984; Magic Suona Horn won the second prize as a new work of Beijing in 1991 and New Work Award at the 2nd Wenhua Award in 1992; Swan Lake won gold award in the Puppet and Leather-silhouette Performance Competition at the 2nd "Golden Lion Award" in 2003.
The theatre has produced excellent works popular with Chinese people, especially with children, based on traditional Chinese fairy tales such as Monkey King · Mountain of Flowers and Fruits, Monkey King · Brave the Journey to the East China Sea, True and False Monkey King, Havoc in Heaven, Jingwei Legend.
The Monkey King - Huaguo Mountain was performed in the "Major Cultural Performance of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games" and the "Theatrical Festival Featuring Programs from National Restructured Troupes in Honour of the 30th Anniversary of the Beginning of the Reform and Opening-up", winning critical acclaim.
