Gathering! Sharing Joy
Everyone who is sincerely connected with a child's heart
will never be an island.
Focusing on the importance of "celebration" as a human need, the exhibition transports viewers into a touching world of triumph and joy. Celebration is vital; it plays an important role in uniting human communities and strengthening bonds. Collective celebration gives a group a sense of belonging, which is integral to humanity. In the wake of the collective reflection prompted by the global pandemic, the exhibition reminds us that no matter what difficulties we face, we can ultimately cross cultural and geographic boundaries and regain our joy in rejoicing.
Gathering! Sharing Joy
Celebration is an indispensable human ritual
The exhibition interweaves narratives that reflect human celebratory behavior-from animals and toys, dolls and human figures, to interactive and festive symbols. Hoffman transforms the way we see things by reinterpreting the vocabulary of everyday life, creating a new visual and spatial experience of the world around us.
Hoffman's work demonstrates the importance of interacting, talking and actively communicating with people in physical space. Social engagement is a key element in Hoffman's creative process as he seeks to create an encounter for the viewer through a universal aesthetic. The joy he creates pushes the audience to seek common ground and communicate with each other, inviting us not only to celebrate, but more importantly, to celebrate together!
In addition to bringing public art to Chinese audiences, Hoffman has also made many good friends in China, co-creating a large-scale art project with renowned singer Li Yuchun, "He Raised It When It Was Still an Egg", which will also come to Shanghai from Beijing~!
In this Shanghai stop, artist Hoffman also brings the latest, world premiere artwork to Shanghai friends: Birthday Cat, a giant cat made of balloons, nearly 20 meters long! A super-sized jerking cat scene~

Artist Florentijn Hoffmann
Florentijn Hoffmann was born in 1977 in Delftzell, The Netherlands, and lives and works in Arnhem. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kampen, The Netherlands, and received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Weissenziger, Berlin, Germany.
Hoffmann's works have been exhibited in more than 20 countries and regions around the world, including the Netherlands, China, the United States, France, Germany, Russia and Brazil. Hoffmann is also a longtime friend of China. In 2013, the "Big Yellow Duck Project" toured Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guiyang, Hangzhou, Qingdao, Taiwan, Macau and other Chinese cities. His large-scale public works "Floating Fish", "Hugging Elephant", "Selfie Panda", and "Moon Rabbit" have also appeared in recent years in cities and exhibitions in China, such as Shenzhen, Dujiangyan, Chongqing, and the first Wuzhen International Contemporary Art Invitational Exhibition.
As a passionate promoter, Hoffman reveals the possibilities of imagination to the public. The layers embedded in Hoffmann's work can be understood as sculptural prose that hides a subtle subtext behind their mischievous gestures. In this way, Hoffman ultimately aims to draw attention to what is present, but not always visible, in the public and cultural realm of the city.
