Ian Bostridge's vocal quality make it unlikely that he will ever be an Italianate bel canto singer, but he has a finely honed, mellow tone and good control of his technique. As a known intellectual bartione, Bostridge's biography is jaw-dropping enough. His deep and rich literary temperament makes him particularly well suited to perform art songs. Of the many songs Bostridge has sung, Schubert's Winterreise is probably his most studied. Since his debut in 1993, he has recurringly performed this work for thirty years, while his personal insights have grown richer and richer. Combining Schubert's music and Müller's poems, Winterreise is undoubtedly a great work of vocal art, and Bostridge is the perfect spokesman for it.
