20th Oct (Sat) @ 18:00 Rainbow Chamber Singers Concert
Rainbow Chamber Singers, a Shanghai-based amateur choir, has seen its stock rise rapidly since its 2016 hit Where On Earth Did You Leave the Key, Zhang Shichao? – and they’re touring again back with a fresh hit: Travels in White Horse Village.
Already very popular amongst local audiences, it has had praise lavished upon it from near and far, with many taking to social media to continue discussion of a piece that invokes idyllic rural scenes and a nostalgia for a simpler, pre-urban landscape.
Founded in 2010 by the choir's conductor, Jin Chengzhi, and a small group of his Shanghai Conservatory of Music classmates, the Rainbow Chamber Singers now has a well-established reputation for quirky songs that are definitively unconventional for Chinese choirs.
While choirs here, even these days, usually perform songs that exalt nationalism, the Rainbow Chamber Singers instead perform lighthearted tunes with amusing lyrics. Yet while the content may be cheerful, the choir is serious and its fifty-six members are pitch perfect.
