Miraculous 2025 Yuyuan Lantern Festival

As a national intangible cultural heritage, the Yuyuan Lantern Festival has become a landmark Chinese New Year cultural event in Shanghai since it was held in 1995. 2025, the Yuyuan Lantern Festival will soon be ‘thirty years old’. 30 years since the Yuyuan Lantern Festival has been everlasting and new, rooted in the core of the Shanghai Old Town Hall, the root of Shanghai culture, the Yuyuan area, is the companion of Shanghai! It is a lantern fair that grows together with Shanghai, telling the Chinese story of oriental life aesthetics to the world from different angles of lantern production, non-genetic inheritance, technological innovation and humanistic stories, and has developed from a traditional folklore lantern fair into an IP with great cultural vitality, creating a national as well as a global Yuyuan Lantern Festival.

2025 Yuyuan Lantern Festival is still continuing the story of ‘Shanhai Qi Yu Ji’, from the perspective of the grand narrative into the ordinary world, to tell the story of every ordinary person as every grain of light in the lamp, ‘everything is beautiful, all living things are wonderful’ as the theme, around the ‘Classic of Mountains and Seas’ from the forest to start the narrative, showing the all-encompassing magical scene of the forest, which is full of life. The story is based on the theme of ‘All things are beautiful, all beings are wonderful’. Every living being in the world has its own value and significance, and every lamp and every device is a tribute and praise to the weak and small living beings.

The lanterns will take the four crossing gates and five thematic scenes as the main lines, brilliantly presenting the snake and the mountains, the sea, the forests and the trees among the hundreds of beasts and birds interlaced with the harmony and beauty, and the symbiosis, the unity of all things in the unity of mankind and the universal values, and show a beautiful and romantic oriental life aesthetics journey.

Through the theme of ‘Mountains, Oceans and Forests’, the festival links ecological civilisation and environmental protection, implements the ESG concept of environmental protection, and creates a green lantern festival. In co-operation with Ningbo Zhou Yao Insect Museum, the festival provides a ‘Green Exploration’ tour for families and children, and through workshops and interactive science games, it implements the initiative of environmental protection in China and the Shanghai Spirit, as well as the social responsibility of the Yuyuan Lantern Festival.
