Blue Note Big Band Series
"In a follow-up to its successful March 2019 concert of modern jazz big band music, this July, the Blue Note Beijing Jazz Orchestra is proud to present a program of original works by Nanjing-based pianist and composer Mark Bai.
As part of a wave of Chinese jazz pianists in the 21st century that include Xia Jia and A Bu, Bai’s musical style reflects an expressive, modernist sense of harmony and musical organization that recalls modern American masters such as Brad Mehldau and Kurt Rosenwinkel, while still retaining his distinctly personal conception. Bai’s music marries formal complexity with profound feeling, with beautiful melodies that move through intricate rhythmic forms and harmonic backgrounds.
This will be the first major presentation of Bai’s music in a large ensemble format, as he has historically favored smaller ensemble settings, and the BNBJO is eager to share this wondrous music with engaged listeners at the Blue Note Beijing." - Kevin Sun
