From November 20, 2021 to February 20, 2022, UCCA presents the first solo exhibition of Italian national treasure artist Maurizio Cattelan in China "Maurizio Cattelan: The Last Judgment". Morigio Cattelan was born in Padua, Italy in 1960. He is one of the most popular and controversial artists on the international contemporary art stage. The title of the exhibition "The Last Judgment" is derived from the famous mural created by the Italian Renaissance master Michelangelo for the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. This exhibition showcases the thought-provoking, funny, challenging and enlightening representative works created by the artist during his 30-year career. In view of the fact that Cattelan’s past exhibitions paid more attention to the unusual presentation of works, this exhibition takes the overall perspective and through loose and open space design, invites the audience to slow down and engage in dialogue with each work, opening up a deeper understanding Experience Cattelan's creative ideas and exploration journey of artistic philosophy. "Maurizio Cattelan: The Last Judgment" is curated by Francesco Bonami and presented by the UCCA exhibition team Liu Kaiyun, Guan Jian, Shi Yao, Yang Hongran and Lin Yan.

"Maurizio Cattelan: The Last Judgment" presents 29 representative works including installations, sculptures and performances in the open space of the UCCA exhibition hall, including the artist's earliest important creation "Family Dictionary" (1989) and famous works "Cartelan" (1994), "Beep Beep Beep Beep Beep" (1996), "Twentieth Century" (1997) and "Comedian" (2019), as well as the creation of taxidermy A series of works. The specific field works exhibited are based on different venues to construct possible life scenarios for homeless people out of thin air, such as "Zhang San" (2021) in this exhibition, and inspired by the image of Picasso, and held in UCCA in 2019 The performance works echoed in the exhibition "Picasso-the Birth of a Genius" stimulated the audience to participate in interaction and explore art with Cattelan. Cattelan’s art view is rooted in contemporary social contradictions. It not only questions the cultural traditions and social stereotypes of his hometown, but also examines the moral concepts of today’s globalized society and the context in which relevant views are generated.

The works in this exhibition are partly based on Cattelan’s life and his life experience as an artist. The self-centered surface personality unexpectedly wraps the multiple faces of the artist’s individual identity, triggering the audience to face death and the impermanence of life. , Especially the contemplation of the artist himself facing death. "No" (2021) uses a figure kneeling on the ground and wearing a paper bag to declare that mankind knows nothing about fate; "Untitled" (1997) shows the moment of death through a rectangular pit and a pile of dirt tailored for Cattelan ; "Mother" (2021) reproduces the artist's first performance in the 1999 Venice Biennale in the form of wall painting. For Cattelan, the dull and stubborn donkey represents himself who resists his identity as an artist, and the elegant and strong horse is the donkey's deadly opponent. However, the horse is sweeping the ground in the work "Untitled" (2007) and is used as an anti-hero trophy. , Embarrassedly trapped on the wall of the gallery.

Other works on display pay tribute to popular culture and Italian art history, such as the pigeon specimen with multiple meanings in "Children" (2011); parody director Mario Monicelli's film " "Untitled" (2001) in the setting of "The Great Man on the Street of Notre Dame" (1958), "Untitled" (1999) created by using Lucio Fontana's iconic fragmented canvas technique, and a reduced version of "Untitled" (2018) Sistine Chapel and frescoes. While showing artistic philosophy, Cattelan also tried to change the size and proportion of objects to create a special sensory experience, such as the miniature elevator that can be operated in "Untitled" (2001). In 1993, Cattelan participated in the Venice Biennale for the first time and created a famous work, "Work is a Chore" (1993), which is full of ridicule and provocative work and artistic production. This exhibition rents out electronic screens and multiple advertisements. This classic work is reproduced in a carousel way. The performance work "Untitled" (1998) mocks the commercialized global art production system. The artist reminds the audience by posing as Picasso's mascot that everything, including art, may eventually become pure entertainment. During the exhibition, the performance interactive performance "Untitled" will be presented in the exhibition hall on weekends and specific public holidays.

"Maurizio Cattelan: The Last Judgment" focuses on the artist's profound and sharp examination of culture, highlighting the dialectical tension between the active choice of trial and the passive acceptance of trial. The exhibition movement and space design is neither to bury hidden works nor to create dramatic surprises, but to encourage the audience to explore the story behind each work in depth, which is produced in the context of the current era and the artist’s practice. Resonate and make a "last judgment" on the artist's creation.
