The saying goes, "There are only two kinds of people in the world, those who like Ryuichi Sakamoto and those who don't know him yet."
Ryuichi Sakamoto is affectionately known to his fans as 'Professor' - because of his knowledge and poise. He is one of the most popular and recognisable composers of our time: Faye Wong wrote about him in a song, Keigo Higashino would describe him in a book, Michael Jackson covered his songs, European churches use his music as bells, and young people around the world wear cultural shirts with his head on them.
In China, he is best known for the soundtrack to the film The Last Emperor. Meanwhile, his classic track 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence' became so widespread that its influence surpassed even that of Isao Oshima's film 'Merry Christmas on the Battlefield' itself, of which Billboard magazine once remarked: "Half of his compositions are soundtracks, but they are in themselves such strong appeal that they can be fully appreciated as pure music on their own."
Ryuichi Sakamoto is a musician of incredible imagination. As such, it is impossible to describe or sum up his music in one sentence. Only by listening to his music can we feel that unique charm.
This concert features a selection of Ryuichi Sakamoto's popular and much-loved classical piano pieces, performed by Dr. Jin Yu, a young pianist who has travelled to the United States for his doctorate in piano.
Special note: the cast, repertoire and order will be determined by the performance on the day!
