Best known for her 1979 hit, "The Olive Tree", Chyi Yu or Qi Yu is a Taiwanese singer who co-produced the album Echo in 1985. She is the sister of the singer-songwriter Chyi Chin. "The Olive Tree" was based on an English poem written by Sanmao about a donkey she had encountered on a trip in Spain.
Michelle Pan, Pan Yue Yun, best known for her soulful vocal, started her singing career in 1980 with the hit song "Tian Tian Tian Lan". Over the years, she has recorded more than 50 albums.
Sanmao (三毛) (March 26, 1943 – January 4, 1991) was a Taiwanese novelist, translator and writer. Born as Chen Mao Ping (陈懋平), her pseudonym was adopted from a character of acclaimed caricaturist Zhang Leping's most famous work, entitled Sanmao. In English, she was known as Echo or Echo Chan.
Sanmao's books deal mainly with her own experiences studying and living abroad. They were extremely well received not only in Taiwan, but also in mainland China, and they remain popular reads today. From 1976 to the time of her death in 1991, Sanmao published more than 20 books. She also translated the comic Mafalda from Spanish to Chinese.
In 1985, Chyi Yu co-produced <Echo> with Taiwanese writer San Mao, Wang Xinlian and singer Michelle Pan.
<Echo> became an acclaimed classic in Taiwan and overseas. In the same year, Chyi was among the 60+ singers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia to record the song "A Better Tomorrow".
