1st Violin: Adam Millstein
Violinist Adam Millstein has dreamed of playing Carmina burana from the moment he first heard the piece. Today, that dream comes true as he performs this electrifying work for the first time.
Millstein’s love for classical music developed at an early age, despite the fact that he doesn’t come from a family of musicians. He picked up the violin at seven years old when he was offered the opportunity through his school’s music class.
At the time, he was attracted to the violin because of the way it looked and the way it felt under his chin. He loved the sound, too—though maybe not the sounds he brought out of the instrument at first.
2nd Violin: Nigel Armstrong
A California native, Armstrong studied at the Colburn School and the Curtis Institute of Music. He has won prizes at the Tchaikovsky and Menuhin violin competitions, and has played with the Dusseldorf Symphony, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra among others. He plays an 1888 Joseph Hel violin with a Eugène Sartory bow.
Viola: Erwan Richard
French violist Erwan Richard has performed extensively throughout Europe and Asia. His chamber music partners includes Mihaela Martin, Joel Smirnoff, Lawrence Lesser, Thomas Brandis, Georg Faust, Daejin Kim, Kyung Sun Lee, Ik-Hwan Bae, Renaud and Gauthier Capucon, Aleksandar Madzar.
As a soloist, Richard has performed with the Innsbruck Symphony Orchestra, Korean Chamber Orchestra, Hwaum Chamber Orchestra, Camerata alla Francese, Lituanian Music Academy Orchestra, Madri Ensemble and Gauting Ensemble under conductors Alexandar Markovic, Kim Min and Jacques Gandard among others.
He took part in numerous recordings for Deutsche Gramofon, Emi, Naive, France Musique, Bayerische Rundfunk and Korean Broadcasting System.
Cello: Matthew Zalkind
Praised for his “impressive refinement, eloquent phrasing, and singing tone” by The New York Times, American cellist Matthew Zalkind has performed throughout the United States and abroad as a recitalist, soloist and chamber musician.
Bass: Nate Farrington
Nathan Farrington graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in May, 2006. Mr. Farrington studied double bass with the Principal Bassist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Hal Robinson, as well as with famed soloist Edgar Meyer.
He appears regularly in the bass sections of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, and the Columbus Symphony, as well as the conductor-less ensemble, the East Coast Chamber Orchestra.
Mr. Farrington was awarded second prize at the 2009 International Society of Bassists Solo Competition, and won the Aspen Music Festival’s 2009 Low Strings Concerto Competition. He has also developed a relationship with Garrison Keillor and has appeared on MPR's "A Prairie Home Companion" numerous times.
