Accademia Bizantina
Accademia Bizantina was founded in Ravenna in 1984 with the intention of “making music like a large quartet”. Then as now, the group is managed autonomously by its guardian members, guaranteeing the chamber music approach to their performances which has ever been their distinguishing feature.

A number of prominent personalities in the musical world supported the orchestra’s development and growth, among them Jorg Demus, Carlo Chiarappa, Riccardo Muti and Luciano Berio. Over the years they have also enjoyed the collaboration of many fine musicians, among them Stefano Montanari who was an integral part of the orchestra for over 20 years. This has allowed the ensemble, which plays on period instruments, to become ever more specialised in 17th, 18th and 19th century repertoire. Gradually the orchestra developed a distinguished voice by adopting its own interpretative style based on a common language and shared performance practice, reflecting the noblest tradition of Italian chamber music .

Accademia’s music starts from the origin (“AB”), from the very rules of the baroque stylistic language: it investigates them without any addition, elimination or transformation, relying on the sounds of period instruments. This unique performing method began in 1996 with the appointment of its conductor Ottavio Dantone, a true expert of Baroque expressive codes.

In 1989 Ottavio Dantone joined the group as harpsichordist and in 1996 he was appointed musical and artistic director, guaranteeing the prestige and artistic quality of the ensemble. Under his expert guidance Accademia Bizantina has merged philological research and an aesthetic approach to the interpretation of music from the Baroque period. His method, forged by experience and an ongoing philological study, has allowed Accademia Bizantina as an orchestra to approach any repertoire with awareness and honesty. Being able to convey the composer’s authentic intentions to the public is an invaluable asset that has earned Accademia Bizantina national and international recognition and collaborations. Dantone’s competence, imagination and sophistication have united with the enthusiasm and artistic empathy of each member of the group, giving their interpretations the depth which makes them one of the most prestigious ensembles on the international musical scene today.

Each performance by Accademia Bizantina, which since 2011 can also count on the charismatic concertmaster Alessandro Tampieri, is an unexpected journey through time, an unparalleled balance between technique, skill, rigour, interpretative culture, intuition and stylistic accuracy.

Accademia Bizantina has recorded for Decca, Harmonia Mundi, Deutsche Grammophon, Naïve, Alpha, Onyx, HDB Sonus. It has received prestigious awards such as the Diapason d’Or, Midem, Choc di Classica, Opus Klassik, Grammy Music Award, Premio Abbiati della critica and Gramophone Awards.

Of particular note are the collaborations with violinists Viktoria Mullova and Giuliano Carmignola, countertenor Andreas Scholl and contralto Delphine Galou. In 2021 Accademia Bizantina was ranked first orchestra in Europe and second in the world at the Gramophone Awards.

Since 2024 Accademia Bizantina has been orchestra-in-residence at the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, where the orchestra has been pursuing and furthering its exploration of the baroque repertoire.
Accademia Bizantina has performed in the world’s most renowned theatres and festivals, such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center (New York), Wigmore Hall and Barbican Centre (London), Théâtre des Champs Elysées (Paris) and Opera Royal (Versailles); Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Bozar (Brussels), Pierre Boulez Saal / Staatoper (Berlin) Kölner Philharmonie, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, ENCPA Beijing, Shanghai Concert Hall, Walt Disney Hall (Los Angeles), Theater an der Wien (Vienna), CNDM Madrid and Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome.

Alessandro Tampieri, Conductor & Violin
A violinist, violist, and exceptionally a guitarist and lutenist as well, he began his musical studies in his hometown of Ravenna, joining Accademia Bizantina at a very young age.

He has performed in concerts as a soloist, chamber musician, in symphony and opera orchestras (Filarmonica and Teatro alla Scala), also engaging in contemporary music collaborating with Luciano Berio and Azio Corghi for recordings and first performances. His appreciation of the musical language of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and a marked aptitude for improvisation led him to devote himself mainly to this repertoire as a violinist. He has worked and still works with Il Giardino Armonico, Divino Sospiro (Lisbon), Academia Montis Regalis, L’Arpeggiata, Artaserse (Philippe Jaroussky), Imaginarium Ensemble and Il Suonar Parlante.

He regularly performs in the most prestigious European and American early music seasons and festivals. He has made recordings for Teldec, Decca, Naive, Harmonia Mundi, Hyperion, Virgin and major European and North American radio stations. Since 2011, he has been Concertmaster of Accademia Bizantina.

He teaches at the Conservatorio ‘G. Rossini’ in Pesaro. He plays a violin built in 2014 by Marco Minnozzi.

His recent recording of Vivaldi’s concertos for viola d’amore and strings, with Accademia Bizantina and Ottavio Dantone, on the Naïve label, received a very warm welcome from both specialist critics and the public.

Press Reviews
There was also a jazzy quality to the ensemble’s playing as a whole, with seemingly intuitive interplay between the members. The two cellists and the bassists often took on the role of a rhythm section, playing with percussive, resonant bow strokes. …the exquisite rhythmic spontaneity that seems to be the hallmark of this excellent ensemble.
- The New York Times

Dantone is a master of pacing, driving finales with assurance, managing gear-changes with ease… Accademia Bizantina play excellently, responding with quick ensemble and sinewy strength to Dantone’s interpretational demands.
- Gramophone

…here delicate and intimate, there audaciously jazzy - are an unceasing delight.
- BBC Music Magazine

...And it is once again a great pleasure to hear Accademia Bizantina with Ottavio Dantone playing with a precision and awareness that has nothing to fear by comparisons with foreign ensembles. Just listen to the freshness of their sound, the aplomb of the most evident entries, and the imagination they show in the art of diminution in the ritornelli..."
- Il Giornale della Musica

…with great verve in the fast movements and tenderness and subtlety in the slow. The sound is crystal clear, highlighting the unique sounds of the instruments, especially the rasping brass and delicate flutes. A real treat.
- Classic FM

. . . superb . . . Engineering is outstanding, capturing the period instruments with resonance and warmth.
