Shanghai Xinyi Chinese Chamber Music Group was established by the time-honoured Shanghai No.1 National Musical Instrument Factory in 2005. It aims to showcase the vitality of traditional Chinese instruments in a modern musical context, through presenting traditional music in its original flavour to integrating innovative elements to create revitalising sounds.
All of the group's members attended the prestigious Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and they have often been invited to perform overseas in countries including Canada, Spain, Germany, Thailand, Japan, France, South Korea and Indonesia.
Many people are unfamiliar with Chinese traditional chamber music, which became overlooked when modern music styles such as pop and rock became popular after China's reform and opening-up, and the style is considered by many to be outdated.
However, Dai Deyue, operating manager of Shanghai Xinyi Chinese Chamber Music Group, aims to dispel such notions and show that the style has evolved through a series of fresh and revolutionary works.
The instruments used in the performances will not only be limited to traditional Chinese ones, but also foreign instruments including percussion from South America.
"We also experiment by integrating instrument playing and dramatic performance, which means that the musicians will also depict different characters in a story that will be revealed during the musical performance," said Dai.
