All encounters in this world are bound by “fate” (Chinese pronunciation: Yuan). Every person you meet is meant to be a part of your life, not by chance but by design. Regardless of whom you met or passed by, each encounter is worth cherishing and remembering, as everything happens upon the best arrangement in life.

Four years of refinement has brought about a work of traditional beauty specially crafted for the Shanghai audience.
The origin of YUAN can be traced back to an improvised dance after the show for "Void" in Shanghai in 2019. Deeply moved by the audience's enthusiasm for folk dances, JIN Haiying was aspired to share the sense of traditional beauty inherited in Chaoxian dance to more and more audience. Longed to reunite with the Shanghai audience, she named her new work YUAN as the word symbolizes the continuation of past connections and the shared experience of the changing seasons in the past three years.
Kayagŭm, Salpuri, double fan, long drum, Sanjo...all in one show
Comprising nine distinct segments, the new work features five solo dances, one duet, one group dance, and two kayagŭm solo performances. The double fan dance represents the rituals of Chaoxian ethnic group. The Sanjo depicts the graceful beauty of the folk tune. Salpuri is a challenging form of dance that requires the dancer to have precise control of breath and rhythm in every movement. The long drum dance is not just dance but also a feast for music. Interspersed within these segments are the quintessential kayagŭm renditions of the classic melodies "Arirang" and "Doraji taryeong."
A dance of life that embodies the distinctive charm of JIN Haiying's Chaoxian dance
In preparation for this show, JIN Haiying returned to her homeland, exploring the connections, reflecting on her dance career over the past thirty years and more, and contemplating about the inheritance and innovation of Chaoxian dance. She aspired to create a work that satisfies her artistic vision, yet she faced the challenge of find a right balance between tradition and contemporary expression.
The answer she eventually arrived at is to be herself and dance in a way only she can dance. As the saying goes, "Words fall short, sing it; singing falls short, dance it." JIN Haiying aims to infuse her insights into dance and her understanding of life into every breath and every movement and convey them to every audience who enters the theater.
